Parks, trails, outdoor ed, and historic places

Because of supporters like you, AVLT has conserved open spaces and special places accessible to the public throughout the Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys. Connecting people to their place is critical to protecting land, wildlife, and water. While not a complete list, these are some of our favorite places for fresh air, for play, for peace, or to connect to our history. We hope you enjoy them too!

Most of these places are available to our community because of our partners. We would not be able to conserve these places without our partnerships and are grateful to the municipalities, organizations, and entities that make our work possible and often own, manage, and/or maintain these special places.

FREDDIE FISHER PARK
Bench at Aspen's smallest pocket pocket
Leave Freddie or AVLT a note at our first land donation! This pocket park in Aspen is small in size but big in our history. Find calm at the wildflower garden or a quiet bench by the river.

HENRY STEIN PARK

Take a break at this AVLT-owned park while walking or biking along the Rio Grande Trail in Aspen. Visitors can access Slaughter House Falls downriver or relax and enjoy the view of Red Butte.

MARBLE CHILDREN'S PARK

ASPEN ALPS PARK

Accessed from Verena Mallory Park Trail or the Hunter Creek trailhead, Emilee Benedict Park and Verena Mallory Park   provide hiking accessible from town and breathtaking views.
Tucked between the Aspen Alps Condominiums and The Little Nell hotel is a small park owned by AVLT where skiers take a short-cut to the gondola and hikers head up Aspen Mountain.

WINDSTAR PRESERVE
Old Snowmass open space
Once owned by John Denver, Windstar is privately owned but open for the public to enjoy the hiking trail, horseback riding loop, and beautiful meadows and views.

NORTH STAR PRESERVE

Located between Highway 82 and the eastern flank of Aspen Mountain, this Pitkin County property encompasses a stretch of the Roaring Fork River, wetlands, recreation access, and wildlife habitat.

SILT RIVER PRESERVE
Students outdoor education in Silt
Along one mile of the Colorado River, Bald Eagles nest and deer forage on 132 acres of conserved land. Also home to Highwater Farm, visitors can hike, fish, or volunteer.

COZY POINT RANCH
Historic Aspen ranch
From outdoor education to sustainable farming, this Aspen-owned property offers recreation access, an equestrian center, an archery range, and a connection to the valley's ranching heritage.

REDSTONE COKE OVENS
Redstone, Colorado historic coke ovens
In 1903 Italian stonemasons built 250 igloo-like ovens to produce coke, a product used for smelting iron ore. AVLT bought the ovens and had them designated as historic. Pitkin County now owns the historic entrance to Redstone.

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSITE
Historic site on Independence Pass in Aspen
Four miles from the summit of Independence Pass, at a 10,900ft elevation, is a ghost town. Once a booming town of gold prospectors, this land is surrounded by National Forest and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
