About AVLT

Since 1967, Aspen Valley Land Trust has helped private landowners preserve over 27,000 acres of working family ranches, scenic viewsheds, riparian and wildlife habitat, and recreational areas in the Roaring Fork and upper Colorado River watersheds.

Mission. The oldest land trust in Colorado, AVLT is a widely known and trusted community based non-profit organization serving the greater Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado River Valley west of Glenwood Springs, which includes parts of Pitkin, Garfield, Eagle, Mesa and Gunnison Counties, including the Fryingpan and Crystal Valleys.

We are committed to preserving key open space corridors through the creation, monitoring and defense of conservation easements in perpetuity. To help accomplish this goal, AVLT maintains a sizable Monitoring and Legal Defense Fund dedicated to carrying out our annual monitoring duties and future legal defense of our easements - thereby ensuring that the conservation value of each property is preserved for all time.

Guidance.  AVLT is guided by a dedicated, all-volunteer Board of Directors, and an experienced staff, monitoring specialists, and legal team that help us work to preserve the best... to last.

2007 was AVLT's most successful year to date - our fourth record year in a row.  We were able to help landowners conserve over 7,300 additional acres of treasured open space.

Accountability. AVLT is an active member of both the Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts (CCLT) and the national Land Trust Alliance (LTA), and adheres to LTA's  Land Trust Standards and Practices, which guide a land trust's ethical and practical responsibilities in conserving land for the public good.

In 2005, AVLT engaged in a voluntary Conservation Easement Program Assessment sponsored and overseen by LTA, which is designed to evaluate a land trust's performance and compliance with Land Trust Standards and Practices.

Accreditation.  In 2008, the Land Trust Acceditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance,is conducting the first round of a voluntary accreditation program for land trusts that extensively reviews each of the applicants's policies and programs in an effort to recognize land conservation organizatons that meet strict national quality standards for protecting important natural resources and working lands.

Acceptance by the Accreditation Commission will acknowledge our compliance with the Land Trust Standards and Practices, and assure our clients, collegues and public that we are dedicated to achieving the highest ethical, fiscal and governance standards for land trusts.

AVLT will be notified of its accreditation status in October 2008.  If you would like to comment on AVLT's application, you are encouraged to log onto the Accrediation Commission's website and click comment on a current applicant. Comments must be received no later than May 1, 2008.
